A number of studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Vtuls’ market-leading technology in improving patients’ outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.

Heart failure

Premise

A Randomised Controlled Trial, conducted by Aaolborg University in Denmark, demonstrated the effectiveness of Vtuls’ telemedicine solution in protecting the physical and mental health of patients. Carried out jointly by the Department of Medicine and Health Technology and the Department of Economics and Management, the study of 299 participants compared the outcomes of patients who received a tablet device, blood pressure monitor, bluetooth enabled weighing scales and telemedicine support from home, compared with a control group that received normal care.

Results
  • Those who received telemedicine care had a reduced mortality rate compared to the control group

  • Those in telemedicine group benefited from a measurable improvement in their mental state, while those who did not get this support reported that their mental wellbeing had worsened

  • There was a cost-saving of 35% per patient per year for patients supported through telemedicine

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Premise

As part of the OpenTeleHealth initiative in Denmark, a collaborative effort between the regional authority and hospitals and GPs across 11 municipalities was launched, leading to 1,400 COPD patients enrolling into the Vtuls home-monitoring solution. Patients were provided with devices to measure indicators such as blood oxygen, blood pressure and heart rate, with healthcare professionals able to monitor patients’ data and respond proactively to disease deterioration or other changes in the patients’ condition. Interventions included video consultations, home training and patient access to further information about their condition, as well as questions delivered through an easy-to-use telehealth app.

Results
  • 9% improvement in rehabilitation for patients with severe COPD

  • 11% improvement in quality of life for patients with severe COPD

  • 20% reduction in the length of hospitalisations for patients with severe COPD

  • Telehealth support also meant that patients were able to maintain activity levels, improving their functional ability, increasing their independence and reducing the need for healthcare services

Complicated pregnancies

Premise

A study by Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark – with methods developed in cooperation with public healthcare providers and research institutions – implemented Vtuls Pro telehealth solution to enable women who were at risk of pregnancy complications to be monitored in their own home. The women were equipped with a tablet, blood pressure monitor and equipment to monitor contraction activity and fetal heartbeat, with data automatically sent back to the hospital through Vtuls’ technology.

Results
  • 44% reduction in the number of inpatient days required for women with pregnancy complications

  • 75% less time required by nurses to spend on patient monitoring

  • 77% reduction in cost of treatment for women with a premature rupture of membrane

  • Satisfaction levels among patients maintained to the same high level
